BMA records near-record Port State Control performance in 2025

Lowest-ever US detention rate

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) reported just one detention in the United States in 2025. This is the joint lowest result ever achieved by the Bahamas flag and the second-best annual PSC performance in its history.

Strong compliance with US standards

This result reduced the Bahamas’ three-year rolling US detention average (2023–2025) to about 0.56%, well below the 1.0% threshold set by the US Coast Guard.
As a result, the Bahamas expects to regain QUALSHIP 21 status for 2026–27.

Solid global performance

Worldwide, the Bahamian fleet recorded 37 detentions from around 2,863 PSC inspections in 2025, giving a global detention rate of 1.29%.

Support and monitoring

The BMA works closely with recognised Class Societies and Nautical Inspectors to support vessels before and during port calls. The Authority provides regional PSC checklists and guidance to help vessels maintain compliance.

Industry recognition

Strong PSC performance supports the Bahamas’ White List status under the Paris and Tokyo MoUs, benefiting the entire fleet.
The BMA credited shipowners, operators and crews for their professionalism and commitment to operational excellence.
