BIMCO, WISTA partner to promote sustainable maritime workforce

BIMCO and WISTA International (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on workforce sustainability and gender inclusion across the global maritime industry.

The agreement was signed during Maritime Cyprus by David Loosley, Secretary General and CEO of BIMCO, and Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International. It commits both organisations to work together on creating safe, fair, and inclusive working conditions as the industry transitions toward new fuels, automation, and digitalisation.

“This partnership reinforces our shared goal of building a resilient and inclusive maritime workforce,” said Loosley. “Ensuring the industry remains an attractive and sustainable career choice is critical for the future.”

The MoU outlines cooperation in research, information sharing, and joint training initiatives aimed at developing skills, promoting gender diversity, and addressing key challenges facing the sector.

Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International, said: “We are delighted to align with BIMCO, an organisation that shares our commitment to advancing a sustainable and inclusive maritime industry. In joining forces, we can amplify our impact by promoting knowledge exchange, professional development, and the collaboration that benefits the entire shipping community.”
