Bilbao Port upgrades border control post facilities

The Bilbao Port Authority is investing over €534,000 to upgrade refrigeration systems at its Border Control Post (BCP), aiming to boost efficiency in handling temperature-sensitive cargo.

The work will include replacing all rooftop condensing units and interior evaporators across cold chambers and loading bays. Spanish firm GIROA, S.A.U. has been awarded the contract following a public tender. The project is expected to wrap up by October 2025, with a four-month construction timeline.

New installations will also include temperature recorders and gas leak alarm systems. Outdoor units will be reorganized into two rows for better space management on the facility’s rooftop.

Bilbao’s BCP is among the most advanced in Spain. It offers 15 bays for loading and unloading, along with specialized facilities for cold storage and perishable cargo handling. The space is divided into separate administrative and inspection areas.

The post handles a wide range of goods, from animal products and feedstuffs to vegetables, plant material, and wood. It operates through e-puertobilbao, a digital platform that connects customs agents, inspectors, and transporters, streamlining the process with a one-stop-shop approach.
