BCT Gdynia orders eight hybrid Konecranes RTGs

Baltic Container Terminal in Gdynia, Poland, has placed an order for eight hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry cranes from Konecranes, including the manufacturer’s landmark 3,000th RTG.

The contract, signed in the second quarter of 2025, marks BCT’s first investment in Konecranes RTG technology.

Owned by global terminal operator ICTSI, BCT Gdynia is one of the Baltic Sea’s key container gateways.

Each of the new cranes will feature Konecranes’ hybrid drive system, which combines advanced battery technology with a compact diesel genset. This configuration significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared to conventional diesel-powered RTGs.

The investment is supported by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program.

The cranes will also be delivered with Smart Features designed to improve safety and operational efficiency, including Stack Collision Prevention, Auto-TOS Reporting, and Auto-Steering.

Maciej Maliszewski, Technical Director at BCT, said the decision to invest in Konecranes RTGs was driven by both performance and sustainability as this investment supports the strategy to boost handling capacity while lowering the environmental footprint.

The cranes will be manufactured in Poland through Konecranes’ established local supply network, and the delivery will include the company’s 3,000th RTG worldwide.

Heikki Kreku, Director of RTGs, Port Solutions at Konecranes, noted the global significance of the order and the fact that the 3,000th RTG will be produced in Poland for BCT is an important milestone.

The project forms part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, which focuses on expanding the positive environmental impact of its portfolio while helping customers reduce carbon emissions.

By offering eco-optimized diesel solutions, hybrid systems, and fully electrified fleets, Konecranes aims to advance decarbonization, circularity, and safety across the material handling industry.
