AYK Energy has completed a battery renewal for four Svitzer hybrid tugs operating at Chevron Australia’s Gorgon LNG terminal. The new AYK Aires lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries replace the original 2012 systems, offering double the energy density for greater power, range, and efficiency.
Each tug, Svitzer Euro, Svitzer Perentie, Svitzer Boodie, and Svitzer Dugong, now carries 1.3 MWh of battery power, totaling over 5 MWh. Batteries fully recharge in 1.5 hours and were manufactured at AYK’s automated plant in Zhuhai, China.
Founder Chris Kruger highlighted the improvements: “The new batteries are safer, more powerful, easier to maintain, and help decarbonize the maritime industry now. LFP chemistry outperforms traditional NMC, delivering better energy density at lower cost and risk.”
AYK Energy is expanding rapidly, supplying vessels including tugs, OSVs, superyachts, and container ships, with projected sales of 100 MWh in 2025. The company plans future factories in the US and Europe to meet growing demand.
