Axpo expands into LNG bunkering in Spain with first MSC delivery

Axpo has completed its first LNG delivery to MSC, one of the global leaders in shipping and logistics, at the port of Málaga.

This marks Axpo’s first LNG bunkering operation in Spain using its chartered small-scale LNG vessel, reflecting the increasing demand for LNG as a cleaner and more cost-efficient alternative to traditional maritime fuels.

In this initial delivery, Axpo supplied approximately 2,800 metric tonnes of LNG via a small-scale LNG vessel, enabling ship-to-ship fuel transfers (bunkering).

Axpo’s small-scale LNG operations in Spain will be supported by two vessels—a 7,500 cubic metre ship and a 12,500 cubic metre ship—both featuring state-of-the-art technology. Beyond bunkering, Axpo will offer additional services, including small-scale break-bulk deliveries and gas up and cool down operations.

While launching operations at the port of Málaga, a key hub for commercial maritime traffic, Axpo will also extend its LNG bunkering services to other Spanish ports, including Algeciras, Valencia, and Barcelona.

This delivery marks the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in Málaga and Spain’s first simultaneous operations (SimOps) by container, allowing LNG refueling to take place alongside cargo loading and unloading activities.

Spain plays a pivotal role in Axpo’s LNG business, which recently celebrated the delivery of 100 LNG cargoes to Europe, totaling 76.07 terawatt hours (TWh).

Domenico de Luca, Axpo’s Head of Trading & Sales, stated: “LNG bunkering is an efficient and cost-effective solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially in the shipping industry.”

Axpo’s Head of small-scale LNG, Daniele Corti, commented: “We are delighted with the great cooperation and support we received from local authorities in Málaga to realise this milestone and secure our operating license. The new service enables Axpo to provide reliable, attractive and versatile energy solutions to our customers.”

Axpo remains actively engaged in the midstream and downstream natural gas and LNG sectors in Switzerland and internationally, trading and transporting gas across Europe. Its LNG customers range from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large industrial energy consumers.
