Axpo has successfully carried out Spain’s first ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation in the large container shipping sector, delivering over 4,000 cubic metres of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG to the CMA CGM FORT BOURBON at the Port of Algeciras.
The operation marks a major step in maritime decarbonisation and follows similar LNG bunkering milestones recently achieved by Axpo in Málaga, Algeciras, and Sines.
The Bio-LNG was sourced via virtual liquefaction from the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena, which has held ISCC EU certification since July. This ensures compliance with EU sustainability, social, and traceability standards. Cartagena’s role as a strategic LNG hub in the Mediterranean underscores the importance of adaptable infrastructure in supporting cleaner fuels.
“This operation demonstrates Axpo’s commitment to pioneering sustainable LNG solutions in the Iberian market and actively supporting the decarbonisation of the maritime sector,” said Daniele Corti, Head Small Scale LNG at Axpo.
The standard proof of sustainability certificate for the delivery was issued in early August 2025 by Enagás.
Axpo continues to scale its Bio-LNG offerings and strengthen partnerships to drive the green shipping transition.
