Associated British Ports names new Group IT Director

UK’s major port operator Associated British Ports (ABP) announced the appointment of Sean Kelly as its new Group IT Director.

Sean Kelly will lead ABP’s initiatives in digital strategy, propelling investments in port operations optimisation, customer service enhancements, and cyber security advancements. Additionally, he brings a wealth of experience garnered from leadership roles in prominent companies like Microsoft, BT, EY, and RBS.

His most recent position as CIO of Business Platforms at Dentsu, a major global marketing and advertising agency network, further solidifies his expertise in driving digital transformation initiatives and implementing ERP solutions on a global scale.

Throughout his career, Sean Kelly has spearheaded the delivery of various IT programmes, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency, bolstering customer service, and fortifying cyber security measures.

“I’m delighted to be joining ABP and I’m eager to build on the strong programmes and team in place. What attracted me to ABP is the company’s great culture coupled with the ambition to carry through its leading position in the UK ports sector to the areas of technology, digitisation and cyber security. State-of-the-art IT infrastructure and new ways of working are essential to be at the forefront of the digital revolution in the maritime industry,” stated Sean Kelly.

ABP has consistently led the way in IT and digital solutions, exemplified by groundbreaking achievements such as pioneering the implementation of a 5G network at a major port in the UK. Additionally, ABP has deployed state-of-the-art terminal operating systems across various terminals handling bulk, breakbulk, containers, and automotive goods. Moreover, ABP has undertaken comprehensive upgrades to vessel traffic and marine management systems.

Moreover, utilizing cutting-edge technology applications, ABP aims to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and safety of both its own operations and those of its customers. Notable endeavours include the successful trials of drone technology, the integration of Internet of Things applications on port equipment, and the implementation of PPE wearables to elevate safety performance.

“Sean will be driving forward a well-established IT organisation, developing and executing the next phase of our digital strategy, including developing a broader IT landscape supporting all areas of ABP’s business. Building smart, flexible and resilient technology platforms to deliver on customers’ needs and business optimisation is a key foundation of our strategy. We’ve made some great strides forward but we’re ambitious about where technology can take us, our customers and partners further,” commented Henrik L. Pedersen, CEO of Associated British Ports.
