Associated British Ports commences works on Millbay Docks revitalisation project

Associated British Ports (ABP), the largest port operator in the United Kingdom, launched the initial phase of the Millbay Docks transformation within the Port of Plymouth.

This marks the commencement of projects funded by the UK Government as part of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport seed capital programme.

“The start of this development, made possible by government funding for Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, marks a significant milestone in our efforts to level up and create opportunities for people living in port areas. This project will enhance connectivity for businesses importing and exporting within the Freeport, and boost trade and long-term economic prosperity for Plymouth and its surrounding areas,” stated Jacob Young MP, minister for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

This milestone represents the latest step in ABP’s strategic infrastructure enhancements at Millbay, aimed at securing the Ferry Terminal’s long-term viability, fortifying the port’s freight capabilities, enhancing environmental sustainability, and expanding services for the cruise market.

The ongoing work focuses on reconstructing the West Wharf, a pivotal component of the broader infrastructure improvement initiative. On 15 January, Teignmouth Maritime Services (TMS), a Devon-based contractor, took delivery of piles, which will be installed over the next six weeks to reinforce the West Wharf, increasing load capacity.

Furthermore, this enhancement will enable the port to efficiently handle general cargo and containers on the berth and accommodate a cutting-edge Passenger Boarding Bridge for ferry and cruise operations.

The reinforcement of the West Wharf will facilitate improved connectivity for businesses within the Freeport, providing seamless access to the sea for importing raw materials and components and exporting finished products. Simultaneously, the Passenger Boarding Bridge will enhance ferry and cruise servicing facilities, elevating the overall passenger experience.

“This work marks an important milestone in a transformative journey for Millbay Docks. We are delighted to be the first funded project that is underway for Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, and it is made possible through the US$1.6 million Seed Capital Funding, alongside further significant investment by ABP, which will not only enhance our ferry terminal – a key hub for Brittany Ferries – but also strengthen our freight capabilities, and expand offering to the Plymouth cruise market,” commented Julian Walker, regional director at ABP.
