Around 1,000 vessels affected by cyber-attack on DNV’s software

Norway-headquartered DNV has confirmed that its ShipManager software was the target of a ransomware cyber-attack on 7 January, admitting that there are 70 customers and around 1,000 vessels affected in total.

In reaction to the issue, DNV specialists have shut down ShipManager’s Information Technology (IT) servers.

The company said that all users can continue to use the ShipManager software’s onboard, offline features. DNV stated it is communicating daily with all 70 affected customers to update them on the findings of the ongoing investigations.

According to the company’s statement, there are no indications that any other DNV software or data is affected, while the server outage does not impact any other DNV services.

DNV added that its specialists are collaborating with worldwide IT security partners to analyse the issue and restore operations as quickly as feasible. Moreover, the Norwegian firm is in contact with the country’s authorities regarding the event.
