Archangelsk to become NSR anchor port

The regional administration of Archangelsk in northwestern Russia is planning to construct a new multipurpose terminal in the port city to serve as a strategic hub for the expanding Northern Sea Route.

The project timeline targets construction commencement in 2030, with the completed facility designed to handle vessels with drafts up to 14.4 meters and deadweight capacities of 75,000 tons.

The terminal’s projected annual cargo handling capacity is set at 25 million tons. The Archangelsk region has already executed a development agreement with Sberbank and logistics company Eurosib for this initiative.

Additionally, China’s Hainan Yangpu NewNew Shipping has reportedly expressed interest in the project.

The Chinese carrier has established a track record of NSR container transits, transporting approximately 13,500 TEU through the Northern Sea Route via its Arctic Express No.1 service during 2024.
