APM Terminals unveils US$1 billion expansion project for container terminal in Rotterdam

Maersk’s port operator APM Terminals has unveiled the expansion project for its Maasvlakte II facility in Rotterdam in a deal with the Port of Rotterdam Authority worth over US$1 billion.

The project involves a site of approximately 475,000 m² with 1,000 metres of deep-sea quay, while the Port of Rotterdam Authority is now constructing the new quay walls, which will be completed by mid-2024.

The expansion project is anticipated to be completed in the second half of 2026, increasing the Dutch terminal’s capacity by approximately 2 million TEUs.

The additional section of the terminal will operate with net-zero emissions and be fully automated and prepared for shore power installation, according to a statement.

A.P. Moller – Maersk already leased 185,000 m² of property in the same region last year for the construction of cross-dock and cold storage facilities, which will open in 2024.

In addition to the new terminal site, an empty depot of around 16,000 m² will also be built for Star Container Services, a subsidiary of A.P. Moller – Maersk, in the area immediately alongside APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.

“We are very pleased with APM Terminals’ decision to expand the terminal and to choose Rotterdam as the hub for its Western European operations,” stated Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
