APM Terminals Suape enters final construction phase

APM Terminals Suape has received 28 fully electrified equipment units supplied by SANY, representing an investment of US$ 47 million and marking the transition into the final construction phase of what is set to become Latin America’s first fully electrified port facility.

The delivery enables the commencement of technical preparation phases ahead of the terminal’s planned opening at the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial and Port Complex in Pernambuco, Brazil.

Total investment in the terminal is estimated at US$ 350 million. Operations are expected to begin in the second half of 2026, at which point the facility will have an initial handling capacity of 400,000 TEUs per year, representing a 55% increase in capacity for the broader Suape port complex.

Daniel Rose, Managing Director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém, described the equipment arrival as a crucial milestone, noting that the project has now entered the stage focused on completing the terminal’s main infrastructure.

He highlighted the facility’s potential to consolidate APM Terminals Suape as one of the most significant recent private investments in port infrastructure across Northeast Brazil.

The terminal is designed to improve export competitiveness and reduce the cost of imported goods for the region, while expanding berth availability and vessel call frequency to strengthen connectivity with global markets.

The development is expected to attract new direct services to Europe and the Far East, addressing a long-standing connectivity gap for Northeast Brazil.

Full electrification of the equipment eliminates fossil fuel usage in terminal operations, supporting APM Terminals’ broader decarbonisation objectives.

The project has already generated more than 2,000 direct jobs, with thousands of additional indirect employment opportunities created across the construction and supply chain phases.
