APM Terminals has begun temporary operations at the Port of Balboa on Panama’s Pacific coast. The operations will last up to 18 months while a new terminal system is installed.
Marliz Bermudez, CEO of APM Terminals Panama, said the priority is to maintain continuity and reliability at Panama’s logistics hub. “We aim to protect cargo, safeguard the workforce, and resume operations with minimal disruption,” she said.
Key tasks in the stabilization phase include:
-
Labor continuity: The existing workforce continues under an employer-substitution process. Their expertise ensures safe operations.
-
Operational continuity: Contingency protocols support container handling. Staff receive training on the new system.
-
Customer service: Direct channels keep shipping lines, suppliers, and transport operators informed. Clients can track their cargo in real time.
-
System migration: The terminal transitions to the Navis N4 operating system. Container movements are regulated, and updates are shared with customers.
-
Asset diagnostics: Cranes, equipment, and systems are inspected. The team defines short-term operation and maintenance plans.
-
Audit: Processes, machinery, contracts, and protocols are reviewed. The audit optimizes operations and ensures compliance.
Bermudez added that APM Terminals will work closely with authorities, customers, and employees to keep operations smooth during the stabilization phase.
