The first ship deployed on CMA CGM’s new Medgulf service, CMA CGM Navegantes called for the first time the South Florida Container Terminal (SFCT) in the Port of Miami, as part of the service rotation.
APM Terminals announces new service and equipment order at Miami box terminal
The French carrier’s Medgulf service started at the end of September and calls Tanger (Morocco), Genoa (Italy), Valencia (Spain), Miami (US), Veracruz (Mexico), Altamira (Mexico), Houston (US) and Tanger.
Six vessels will be deployed on the service’s new route, which is expected to offer improved transit times.
Meanwhile, SFCT announced an order for 12 electric cranes with emission-free tyres from Kalmar. The new equipment is anticipated to be delivered in the second quarter of 2023.
This is expected to transform the facility into a more sustainable operation, according to APM Terminals, with new, electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and additional cargo storage space, using a densification model that allows 33% more usability at the container dock than before.
“This will increase capacity to approximately 300,000 lifts per year,” said APM Terminals.
South Florida Container Terminal was founded in 2008 and is a joint venture between the Maersk-owned port operator and Terminal Link. According to APM Terminals, Miami is the first port of call for Florida-bound cargo from Latin America and Asia.
