Anemoi wins funding for Rotor Sail upgrade

Anemoi Marine Technologies has won £1.2 million in government funding to develop its next-generation Rotor Sail system.

The UK-based company will use the support, awarded through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), to design and test a new folding Rotor Sail tailored to Kamsarmax and Panamax bulk carriers.

This new 3.5-metre folding system will be the first of its kind, making the sails easier to lower during port operations. Anemoi says this will remove key barriers to wider adoption of wind-assisted propulsion.

”This funding will support Anemoi in advancing the next generation of Rotor Sail technology. While our Rotor Sails are already efficient and high-performing, ongoing innovation is essential to unlock further efficiency gains,” stated Clare Urmston, CEO, Anemoi.

The seven-month project also includes aerodynamic upgrades expected to boost fuel savings and cut emissions beyond the company’s current Rotor Sail models.

UK partners will support the project across design, testing, and research. Pressure Design Hydraulics Engineers will build the prototype rig, while Cape Horn Engineering and Stehr Consulting will lead the aerodynamic enhancements. Victoria Steamship, which operates nine bulk carriers, will provide operational insights. Connected Places Catapult will conduct market analysis and integration studies.

So far, the CMDC has invested £136 million in clean maritime technology, helping to drive innovation and support coastal communities across the UK.
