Americold opens first import-export hub with CPKC

Americold Realty Trust has opened its first Import-Export Hub on the CPKC rail network in Kansas City, Missouri. The US$100+ million, 335,000-square-foot facility will speed up cross-border food shipments.

The hub serves the Mexico Midwest Express (MMX), North America’s only single-line refrigerated rail service between the U.S. and Mexico. It offers on-site USDA inspections, handles containers over 50,000 pounds, and supports a 300-mile service radius. The facility also consolidates longer-haul shipments, including flows from Canada to Mexico.

George Chappelle, Americold CEO, said, “We’ve unlocked a better way to move food across North America.” CPKC CEO Keith Creel added, “This facility creates a new refrigerated supply chain across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.”

The hub is expected to create nearly 190 jobs. It is part of Americold’s plan to expand Import-Export Hubs and improve food flow across the continent.
