Agreement for the port infrastructure system

The agreement between administrations for the port infrastructure system of national and international economic importance was signed on July 11, 2018 at the Citadel of Catanzaro.

The total amount of investments envisaged by the Agreement amounts to € 74.900 million, of which € 60 million are allocated by the Region with funds for development and cohesion and € 14.9 million by the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro.

The agreement was signed, for the Region, by the President Mario Oliverio, for the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, by the Provincial Public Works Agency Sicily-Calabria Donato Carlea, for the port authority of Gioia Tauro by the extraordinary commissioner Rear Admiral Andrea Agostinelli, for the regional Consortium for production activities, by the extraordinary commissioner Rosaria Guzzo.”

It is – said President Oliverio after thanking everyone for the excellent work done – the final act of a concertation process started with the resolution of the Regional Council of 2016 with which the Region has decided to allocate the funds of the Pact for development at the port of Gioia Tauro and the national ones. It is fundamental – he remarked strongly – to respect the timetable of the interventions as the Gospel. We can not afford to divert resources. The acts that will follow the signing of this Agreement are those that will enable us to activate the investments made in the field. We need the commitment of everyone to boost the port system through the recovery of funds but above all with quality programs “.

The regional vice-president and councilor for logistics and the port system Francesco Russo said that “in the program all the ports of Calabria are channeled even that, expected for years, Crotone, Corigliano, which will be connected to the industrial area of Schiavonea, Vibo and Reggio Calabria. It is also expected to strengthen the Palmi which will strengthen the port of Gioia Tauro. I believe that such a complete planning had never been realized for the Calabrian port system. But the Act we sign today – he underlined – provides precise commitments, not only of a financial nature, and a time schedule, both for the procedural and for the implementation of the interventions, which must be respected in time otherwise the risk is that will be diverted to other works for Calabria “.

Regarding the timing, according to the general manager of the regional infrastructure and public works department Luigi Zinno “already at the end of this month we can go to the signing of the implementing agreements”.

Specifically, the interventions concern the ports of: Gioia Tauro (16.500 million euros), Reggio Calabria (6.500 million euros), Vibo Valentia (18 million euros), Taureana di Palmi (4,500 million euros), Corigliano Calabro ( 12.900 million euros), Crotone (9 million euros), Villa San Giovanni (5 million euros). In addition, another 2,500 million euros are provided for the electronic control of the Strait.

The initiative was also attended by the Calabria Maritime Director of the Tyrrhenian Basilicata, Rear Admiral Giancarlo Russo, the manager of the Calabria Maritime Works Agency Francesca Vampo, the regional manager of the port system sector Marco Merante, the regional manager of the Planning coordination structure national Tommaso Calabrò.
