Advanced 5G surveillance and autonomous drones to strengthen Port of Valencia security

The IMAGINE-B5G project’s success hinges on 5G connectivity, speed, efficiency, optimization, and real-time coordination.

This initiative, part of the Port Authority of València (PAV) innovation strategy, has been developed by Telefónica, XRF, ETRAIR, and coordinated by the PAV, the Valenciaport Foundation, and the iTeam Institute of the Polytechnic University of València.

The project’s goal is to develop a pilot using advanced 5G communications, such as network slicing and network apification, which enable transformative port security technologies like generative Artificial Technology (AI), augmented reality and digital twins.

Furthermore, the Port of València hosted a simulation to test the project’s virtual control centre platform and technology. Two emergency and security scenarios were demonstrated.

In the first scenario, an autonomously managed drone was operated from the virtual command and control centre, which had a digital twin of the Spanish port. The virtual reality platform defined a surveillance round, with the drone transmitting images through the network. Generative AI analyzed these images and generated alerts for intrusions in restricted areas.

In the second scenario, the virtual command and control centre received live images from the port’s surveillance circuit, also transmitted via the network. Generative AI analyzed the video in real-time, detected open doors in restricted areas, and autonomously dispatched the drone to the alert location.

Moreover, this pilot project showcases how these combined technologies provide comprehensive situational awareness during emergencies, enabling remote, immediate, and effective management.
