Accelleron and HD Hyundai Marine Solution (HMS) have improved fuel efficiency on two Hapag-Lloyd container ships using Engine Part-Load Optimization (EPLO).

The Basle Express and Essen Express recorded fuel savings of over 10g/kWh, equal to about 5% lower consumption at certain load ranges.

Optimized for Lower Speeds

The upgrades included:

  • Engine tuning for part-load operation

  • Turbocharger modifications and cut-out systems

These changes allow vessels to run more efficiently at reduced speeds while still maintaining full power when needed.

Fast Results, Fleet Expansion Planned

The project moved quickly, with commissioning completed within four weeks of order. Following the results, Hapag-Lloyd plans to roll out EPLO across eight more vessels in its Dortmund Express-class fleet.

Supporting Decarbonization

EPLO helps shipowners improve efficiency and meet regulations such as FuelEU Maritime and emissions targets. The solution is gaining traction, with more than 100 vessels already contracted globally.

The project highlights a scalable retrofit approach to cut fuel consumption, reduce emissions, and improve vessel performance.
