ABS to evaluate floating nuclear power plants

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), CORE POWER, and Athlos Energy have formed a consortium to evaluate the potential deployment of floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs) to meet the energy needs of islands, ports, and coastal communities in the Mediterranean Sea.

The study will explore how FNPPs could deliver clean, grid-scale electricity to remote areas, provide emission-free power to ports, and support desalination operations supplying potable water to drought-stricken regions. This initiative comes amid growing global interest in low-carbon, resilient energy solutions.

ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki highlighted the potential of small modular nuclear reactors on floating platforms to support both microgrids and large-scale infrastructure.

CORE POWER CEO Mikal Bøe emphasized the opportunity to mass-assemble FNPPs in shipyards, ensuring scalable, on-time delivery of carbon-free energy. Athlos Energy co-founder Dionysios Chionis noted that the project marks a significant step toward considering nuclear options in Greece’s energy mix.

The consortium will develop original concepts of operation (CONOPS), map potential FNPP sites in the Aegean Sea, and conduct a comprehensive PESTLE analysis led by the ABS Global Ship Systems Center in Athens. The results will be published in a publicly available white paper aimed at informing industry and government stakeholders.
