ABS and Fleetzero have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the technical requirements for containerized battery systems for maritime use.

The agreement sets a framework to review system designs and configurations. It also supports the development of testing methods and quality control processes to ensure safety as new commercial battery solutions enter the market.

ABS will contribute its expertise in marine battery guidance and classification. The collaboration will focus on addressing key deployment challenges, including energy density limitations and safety risks compared to conventional marine fuels.

“ABS provides industry-leading guidance to support the adoption of marine battery systems,” said Michael Kei, Vice President of Technology at ABS. “The next step is overcoming deployment barriers, particularly energy density constraints and safety challenges. We are proud to work with Fleetzero to explore new solutions with safety as our guiding principle.”

Fleetzero will share its experience in high-density, containerized battery technology designed for marine applications.

“Fleetzero is proud to partner with ABS on innovative containerized battery solutions,” said Steven Henderson, CEO and Co-founder of Fleetzero. “This collaboration will help advance industry standards and establish new technology benchmarks. Our goal is to accelerate zero-emission shipping at a cost competitive with diesel.”

The collaboration supports the broader maritime industry’s transition toward safer, more efficient, and lower-emission energy solutions.
