ABB secures record-setting order for permanent magnet shaft generator systems

ABB has obtained contracts to supply its permanent magnet shaft generator technology to 18 and 12 liquified natural gas (LNG) carriers being built in China and South Korea, respectively, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030.

This technology enhances operational efficiency by harnessing power directly from the main engine, improving fuel economy over systems relying on auxiliary engines.

ABB estimates that its shaft generator system can reduce fuel costs by up to 4% compared to traditional systems.

The system’s design, which eliminates the excitation unit and leverages the compact size of the permanent magnet shaft generator, offers up to 20% savings in space and weight.

It also simplifies installation and maintenance, thereby reducing costs. These advantages provide substantial benefits for ship owners striving to enhance competitiveness and meet the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization targets.

“We are honored to receive the largest ever combined orders for our permanent magnet shaft generator systems, marking the introduction of this technology to new clients among multiple AMEA region LNG carrier operators from shipbuilders in China and South Korea,” stated Michael Christensen, Global Segment Responsible for Cargo Vessels at ABB Marine & Ports.
