ABB powers world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht

ABB has integrated advanced technology on Feadship Breakthrough, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht. Built by Dutch yachtmaker Feadship, the 118.8-meter vessel launched in May 2025. It is one of the first in the world to feature multi-megawatt fuel cell power.

The yacht carries a 3MW hydrogen fuel cell system. It can power all hotel functions and onboard amenities without emissions. It can also operate silently at anchor for up to a week. At 10 knots, it can navigate in harbors or protected zones with zero emissions.

ABB supplied the Onboard DC Grid™ power platform and two 3.2MW Azipod® propulsion units. These systems cut noise and vibration on board. The Power and Energy Management System (PEMS™) optimizes energy use. ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Control helps the crew switch smoothly between joystick and dynamic positioning, making docking easier.

The scope also included shore power connection and remote diagnostic services.

Feadship Director Jan-Bart Verkuyl said the project shows passenger comfort and environmental protection can work together. ABB’s Riccardo Repetto called the yacht a breakthrough for marine fuel cell integration and a showcase for hydrogen as a viable alternative to conventional fuels.
