20th Maersk’s anniversary in Tunisia

A.P. Møller – Maersk has been present in Tunisia for two decades. Celebrating this anniversary, the company highlights its long-term relationship with customers and partners, ready to support local businesses as the economy starts to rebound.

Tunis, Tunisia — According to data from The World Bank, Tunisia’s economic growth is slowly gaining steam. After recovering modestly to 2% in 2017, growth accelerated to 2.5% in the first quarter of 2018 and 2.8% in Q2 (year-on-year). Overall, growth is projected to reach 2.4% in 2018, before gradually approaching its mid-term potential of about 3.4%.

Amid this positive development, Maersk is celebrating two decades on the local market. The company has been present in Tunisia since 1998, consistently maintaining services and operations and enabling trade of containerised goods for Tunisian exporters and importers. “We thank our loyal customers and partners for the support over the past 20 years and we look forward to jointly unlocking business opportunities also in the future”, shares Marcos Hansen, Managing Director for West Mediterranean at Maersk Line.

Maersk is strongly represented in Tunisia, with liner carriers Maersk Line and Sealand Europe and Med (previously Sego Line) taking care of containerised cargo transportation and APM Terminals (through a joint venture company Star Container Tunisia) involved in inland container business and infrastructure investments in the port logistics sector.

Large-scale investments in the infrastructure sector were announced in Tunisia in November 2016 at the “Tunisia 2020” conference held in Tunis. With as much as 98% of all cargo entering Tunisia through its maritime port network, sea transport remains pivotal for maintaining the country’s dynamic trade relations. Similarly, connecting the coastline and ports with the country’s interior is another important factor for ongoing development. “We are very happy to be part of this exciting development journey, and to contribute by supporting the logistics sector in Tunisia”, comments Alexandre Cour, Managing Director of Star Containers Tunisie. “We have enjoyed very good cooperation with local authorities, and partners over the past years and we look forward to working closely with our key stakeholders also on the future.”
