Free time clause on Bills of Ladings

Sealand Americas constantly strives to provide reliable and innovative products to its customers. “In order to continue offering our high quality and unmatched reliability, we have taken an initiative to standardize the demurrage & detention free-time clause on the Bill of Ladings (BL)”, company said in its press release.

If the free-time mentioned by you on the Shipping Instruction is different than the ones agreed in your contract with Sealand Americas, it would mention the free-time which is lesser of the two. This free-time will also reflect in the verify copy for you to be able to validate. Should you receive the verify copy with a different free-time than what you had specified, please check the free-time term filed in your contract.

It would be better for you to provide free-time clause in pertinent field of your respective channels for the most effective processing, as per below:

For all other E-Channels:  ‘Shipper’s memoranda’/’General Information’/’Shipping remarks’/’Free text’

To avoid any confusion, company will issue the verify copy / bill of lading with a standard free time clause which would appear as shown below:

  • Applicable free time xx days Combined (Detention & Demurrage) at (port of discharge / place of delivery)
  • Applicable free time xx days detention & yy days Demurrage at (port of discharge / place of delivery)
  • Applicable free time xx days detention at (port of discharge / place of delivery)
  • Applicable free time xx days Demurrage at (port of discharge / place of delivery)

Please note that free-time mentioned on the BL are the calendar days and not the working days.
